Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone

(‘cos I’m reading the Bloomsbury British edition, of course).

One thing I noticed as I read the first book in the series the other day is that Neville is in more scenes in the book than in the movie, specifically the scene where they discover Fluffy in the third floor corridor.  Iiiiinteresting…. (vows to keep an eye on that Neville.)

Oh No, I’ve Succumbed to a Web Quiz!

Your Score: Older Futhark

You scored

Language of the Norse, Older Futhark! Thirty symbols, all told. And no hardier, more warrior-like tongue has ever graced the longships of the Viki or left the Celts and Saxons in such quivering fear. There’s only one drawback, that being you died 800 years ago.

Harry Potter, of course

(shhhh, come closer, I need to whisper:) I never finished HP6. Got about half-way through and couldn’t take it any more. So I have decided, knowing that the “thud” I hear from the porch on Saturday morning is the LAST BOOK, to reread them before I start on 7. Charles is going to re-read 6 at any rate, but this should give me a good lead-in to it. I am not looking forward to it very much, to be honest.

We’re not on Drury Lane, but…

… my kids have made some awesome muffins lately. The Daughter, who loves blueberries, was intrigued by the New York Cookbook’s “Morning Time Muffin” recipe, and loved the results. I think we’ll be making those for lunches this year, for sure. The Boy can’t stand blueberries (that’s my boy!) so opted for chocolate chip muffins instead, from this recipe. Mmmmm, chocolate…..

The End Is Near

More photos of our almost-finished garage. Unfortunately, it seems that it’s going to rain every day from now until the end of recorded history, so I don’t think we’ll ever actually get to use the garage, but it sure looks nice.

The Back Yard

Haven’t posted much, have I. I’ve spent the past two days at Cub Scout day camp. Been a bit busy. ANNOYINGLY, the garage guys have been anti-busy. I.e., they haven’t been here. They should have come to finish pouring concrete on Monday, but, um, forgot, and we had a hell of a storm that night – I don’t think the mud has dried completely yet, after four days. So now the plan is, build the garage, THEN pour the driveway. So what with waiting for it to dry and so on, looks like the earliest we can expect to park in the garage is next weekend. Assuming good weather, etc etc. Sigh.

Some photos.

Pave the Earth

Most of the cement is down; we just need the actual “approach” from the alley to the garage itself:

Backyard photos.

We’ve lost two days to this bloody weather, and now it’s so hot that I feel guilty just watching anyone work outside. And of course this is the day that Charles decides to replace the posts in the backyard fence. IDIOT.

Progress!

We have achieved cement! It’s 7:30 a.m. The cement truck is blocking the alley. What will happen, I wonder, when the garbage truck comes through….
