Gender Identity

My son discovered his sister’s Easy Bake oven in the basement recently. He is entranced. We had to go to the evil Backwards R toy store to get cake mixes. Tomorrow’s breakfast will consist of cakes from the oven, baked by the boy. I knew when we named him that he’d end up as either a dictator or a chef; I guess I wasn’t joking as much as I thought I was.

My husband does not appear to be fazed by this at all, in contrast to my brother, who (if his son decided to play with a pink toy) would have a total heart attack. So yet again, GO CHARLES!

Konfabulator

Yahoo! bought Konfabulator, and turned it into freeware. I had never heard of it before this weekend. It’s way way fun; if you want to clutter up your desktop with useful (calendar, weather summary, todo list) or useless (Yellow Submarine floating around, Leo LaPorte’s head following your mouse arrow) things, then I highly recommend that you check this out. There are over 600 Konfab “widgets” available to play with – I think it took me 45 minutes to go through them all.

Demonstrable Insanity

It’s 100 degrees F outside. The heat index makes it much MUCH worse. Guess what we had for supper? Yup, ::grilled:: hamburgers and corn on the cob. It was delicious (says the person who stayed inside, setting the table and so on). We have a new grill. Or I should say, *he* has a new grill. It’s all rugged and macho. And bigger than the Weber kettle grill we had until Friday.

The WILL

We are making progress. Not only do we have a primary guardian/executor/trustee, we now have secondary ones as well. This is hard work – I can see why lots of people just don’t bother. I still have no idea how much it will all COST, which makes me fearful…

FINALLY!

1. School started again today. THANK THE LORD! Only two hours, but now I can look forward to NINE WEEKS of not worrying about babysitters! Charles and I are going to lunch tomorrow to celebrate.

2. Those screams you just heard? Those came from our daughter, who did not enjoy having a wart frozen off. Yikes.

Relatives

My aunt fell asleep at the wheel today, and was hit as she cruised through an intersection. She any my mother appear to be unhurt. My aunt attributes this to some medication she taking for neuralgia. Sigh. I’m not ready for this yet.

[Later: I'm not being blase, really - I just can't convey the "I want to go somewhere far away and scream" feeling in print very well, is all.]

THE BOOK

It came, FINALLY. Again, I was out when it arrived, so my husband oh-so-helpfully called me to gloat read me the first couple of lines (he did this to me last time, while I was at work and had to wait five more hours). I hung up on him, after using some rather vulgar language.

At one point, after the 38th Front Porch Where-IS-that-damned-box!? Patrol, I began to suspect that someone, either Charles or my neighbor, had actually hidden it from me, such is the depth and breadth of my paranoia in these circumstances.

The final absurdity is that I read so many spoilers early this morning that I know what happens in the book on a chapter-by-chapter basis. But I’m on page 250 anyway.

Three Out Of Seven

This is shaping up to be quite the odd week. Last night, we went out. Tonight, we went out. Tuesday, as far as I know, we will be able to go out if we choose to do so. I assume that the karmic balance of the universe will have to shift against us to maintain itself, and we won’t be able to find a babysitter for the next year, but oh well.

Last night we played trivia at the library, which was surprisingly fun, then went to a martini bar about which I had heard wonderful things. WHAT A LETDOWN. They had NO FOOD, not so much as a roasted peanut or dry bread crust. They had NO GLASSES! (I ordered a mini sampler of wine, and they didn’t have four wine glasses??!! I mean really.) The waitrons were all hitting on the chicks sitting at the bar, so the service was abysmal. Six thumbs down, was our verdict.

Tonight, Dave had to do something at the radio station for ten minutes at the top of the hour, every hour from 4pm to 10pm. Just barely not enough time to go home and do something productive, or take a nap, so he suggested pizza at the station. We got the grand tour (I now know the location of the One Button that will take the station completely off the air), and sat around chatting, then went to Whitey’s once he had accomplished whatever he needed to accomplish. Dave, as a divorced male person, was able to give me some insight into my brother’s difficulties (in essence, “seek therapy”) that I probably needed.

Tuesday night my brother and sister-in-law are going to have our kiddies for a “sweepover” (yikes!), so that’s our third evening of freedom. O the possibilities.

Lincoln Museum – Springfield IL

We went, on the spur of the moment, last weekend. The museum is new. It was pleasant, yet oddly annoying. I am going to figure out why, then write more here.
